Police Report Rash of Burglaries As summer drew to a close, six homes and two businesses in Maplewood were burglarized, according to Maplewood Police. Residents reported burglaries on Elmwood Avenue, Boyden Avenue, Tiffany Place, Highland Avenue, Orchard Road and Franklin Terrace. Woman Punched Train Conductor, Pulled Emergency Brake Nadine Canty, 48, of Plainfield, allegedly punched a conductor and pulled the emergency brake of a train heading to Summit, affecting South Orange and Maplewood commuters. Canty was charged with aggravated assault, criminal mischief and interference with transportation, said NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder. Speed bumps, street lighting and a neighborhood watch group are all part of plan for the neighborhood.
Jacoby Street has been in the news again. Last week, three residents of the street were arrested for disorderly conduct during a scuffle. Sometimes known as the Lightening Brook neighborhood and including part of Boyden Avenue as well as Harding Street, Hughes Street, Menzel Avenue and 44th Street, the area has had recurring problems with crime, traffic and speeding, and litter. In September of 2010, the murder of Victoria Carmen White in a Jacoby Street apartment put the street into the national spotlight. That year, the neighborhood also saw a wave of burglaries and car break-ins, leading the Township to ramp up police presence and hold a community meeting. A man, his mother and a third person were arrested on Jacoby Street by Maplewood Police during a police “enforcement action” in the area that turned into a scuffle. When it was over, the three were charged with disorderly conduct, obstruction of the administration of law, resisting arrest and in one case, aggravated assault on a police officer, according to Chief Robert J. Cimino of the Maplewood Police Department. Those arrested were identified as: 20-year-old Sydir Baptist, his mother Tiffany Baptist, 42, and 18-year-old Hensly Jeanty. Police said Friday the arrests took place during an "enforcement action" on Jacoby Street in the early evening hours of July 24.
