Elected officials are sworn in, will discuss 2012 accomplishments and priorities for 2013.
Maplewood Township will hold its annual Reorganization Meeting Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013 at noon at the Maplewood Municipal Building (Town Hall.) The meeting, which is open to the public, will feature the swearing in of elected officials (Mayor Vic DeLuca will be sworn in for his eighth term as Mayor, and Jerry Ryan and Kathy Leventhal will take the oath of office after being reelected to the township committee.) The Mayor will give his State of the Township address (see addresses from 2012, 2011, 2010). The township by-laws will be adopted, and various appointments will be made. Election day is Tuesday; here is a summary of candidates' positions from the October 18 forum.
There were few surprises at Thursday night's Maplewood Township Committee debate, and on the majority of issues the three candidates seemed to find more points of agreement than contention. The forum, which attracted a crowd of roughly fifty people, was sponsored by The Hilton Neighborhood Association (HNA) at the DeHart Community Center in Maplewood. Hilton Neighborhood Association sponsors event on October 18.
The Hilton Neighborhood Association (HNA) will sponsor a candidates forum for the Maplewood Township Committee on Thurs., October 18 at 7:30 p.m. at DeHart Community Center, 120 Burnett Ave., Maplewood. Three candidates are running for two seats on the committee on Nov. 6. There are two Democratic incumbents -- Kathy Leventhal and Jerry Ryan -- and one Republican challenger, Art Gartenlaub. The term for each position is three years. This is Gartenlaub's second attempt at a Township Committee seat. Residents from JESPY House learn how to make salsa from fresh vegetables.
Residents from JESPY House who have been maintaining two plots at the South Orange Elks Rent Pary Community Garden were recently treated to a salsa-making demonstration from local resident Gareth Jones. The volunteers have been working in the garden under the supervision of garden coordinator Irene Dunsavage. Jones, assisted by his wife, Liz, made salsas representing the flavors of India, Mexico and Greece. The JESPY residents got to sample the salsas and brought back the finished products to the house to share with other residents. Maplewood's Deputy Mayor Kathy Leventhal also took part in the event. The residents have been visiting the site on Mondays and Thursdays to harvest produce for local food pantries. The garden is being funded…
