Thread, Yarn and Paint on Springfield Avenue

Feeling crafty? creative? Springfield Avenue has you covered.

Summer may be winding down, but that's no reason to give up on all the crafty camps that summer bring for kids. There's plenty to creatively look forward to on Springfield Avenue, for your child(ren) — and for yourself. At It's SEW Crafty, fall brings loads of cool ideas to what some may consider a lost art. Katie Clayton, aka Crafty Katie, can teach everyone from kindergarten to adult to sew. And she teaches her way. “My mother taught me how to hand sew when I was eight. I began sewing my own doll clothes out of felt and old tee shirts. Then my grandmother taught me how to use a sewing machine and tried to guide me while I made a skirt for her mother.” said Katie. “My grandmother didn't have the patience for a beginner seamstress, but I …

The Tuscan Fair Goes On

Iffy weather doesn't dampen spirits.

It may not have been the perfect spring day weatherwise, but that didn't stop Tuscan School family and friends from enjoying a great day at the annual Tuscan Fair on Saturday, May 14. Fun included face painting, sand art, fortune telling and various games of skill and chance for a good cause — including an adults-only game of musical chairs won by Joe Strupp. The funds raised go to the Tuscan PTA. New this year was a classroom basket raffle. Each class donated items to their themed basket. Some of the themes included a Reader Lover's Basket with books and gift cards to Words, a Baking Basket with apron and kitchen utensils, and a Beach Basket with sand toys. Food and treats included hot dogs, sno-kones and cotton candy. To counter the …

Carpool Candy: A Kid's First Concert

Concert tours ain't what they used to be.

If you love music as much as I do, you want your first rock concert to be magical. My first was actually not a terrific experience. I was invited to see Rush with some friends when I was in eighth grade. For some crazy reason, my mother let me go to a huge, dark stadium with a weird skunky smell—without parental supervision—to see a band I didn’t really care about. I wasn’t connected to the music and we spent the whole time wandering the stadium halls trying to hook up with friends and avoid the intense crowds. I got it right the second time with a Madonna concert when I was 16. I belted out every word of her songs, faithfully wearing an armload of rubber bracelets, mini skirt and lacy top. It was quintessential '80s pop. I embraced it …

Photos: Jefferson School Ice Cream Social

Students, teachers and parents kick off the school year with cold treats.

On Thursday, Sep. 10, Jefferson School held its annual ice cream social. Ice cream was, of course, the centerpiece of the affair, but there was other entertainment as well, including a DJ. South Orange and Maplewood school district Superintendent Brian Osborne was on hand to introduce recently hired Jefferson School Principal Susan Grierson.  Jefferson School PTA member (and Patch columnist) Brooke Lefferts was on hand to snap some pics.

Carpool Candy: Balancing Nutrition

Getting kids to eat healthy is a constant challenge.

Parents, can we all just make a pact? We all want the best for our kids right? I am really struggling this summer with how to feed my guys healthy meals and it doesn’t make it any easier when it seems like so many other parents are indulging their kids. During the school year, I work hard to ensure my kids eat three square meals that include a nice balance of protein, fruit and vegetables and maybe some grains if I’m lucky. They drink milk or water and average a glass of juice a day.  I have made an agreement with them that they can have a junky snack (sun chips, pretzels, cheetos, cookies) if they eat fruit first. They are cool with this arrangement and actually enjoy many fruits and vegetables, without any prompting. They eat a dinner …

VIDEO: 'Little Red Rosie and the Three Big Pigs' Rehearsal

The show will be performed on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in Cameron Field.

Written by local playwrights Jeff Larkin and Nancy S. Chu, "Little Red Rosie and the Three Big Pigs" is described by its creators as a "fractured fairytale." Playing in both South Orange and Maplewood, the play is a mash-up of several popular children's tales, told with a skewed sensibility. The performances are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at  Cameron Field in South Orange and Thursday, Aug. 20, at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Park in Maplewood. During Patch's visit, the cast and crew were hard at work the day before the show opened. We recorded video of a run-through of the closing dance number. Check it out.

Carpool Candy: The Boys of Summer

In her inaugural column, Brooke Lefferts takes on the national pastime

Ed’s Note: This is the first edition of a new feature, “Carpool Candy.” With each column, Brooke Lefferts, a Maplewood resident and mother of three boys, will tackle a different aspect of raising a family. This week, she tackles the official game of summer, baseball. Enjoy! There are a few things I have come to accept as the mother of three little boys. There will always be a single dirty sock tucked into random pieces of furniture… there is a very short window for sitting still at the dinner table… and despite our no guns rule, there is no end to the innocuous toys they can fashion into a weapon.  So, I should not have been surprised when my 9-year-old son, Jacob, fell in love with baseball. My husband is a huge baseball fan and would …

Kid-Friendly Eating in Maplewood Village

A guide to the town's restaurants made with parents in mind.

When you become a parent, you start to evaluate restaurants differently. Instead of just looking at menus, price and ambiance, you have to consider whether the music will drown out a screaming toddler, whether there's enough room to maneuver a stroller, or whether—and this is more important than you think—you're the only one who brought their kids into the restaurant. Most Maplewood Village restaurants happily cater to young kids for lunch and dinner. The Village restaurants offer a variety of food, and even the most finicky young eaters are likely to find a favorite dish. Asian Bill & Harry Chinese Take Out does not have seating. They are extremely family friendly, being a family-owned and run restaurant. While they do not have a children…
