Duck Race Tradition Marks Memorial Day

The weekend weather did not look promising, but it turned out just 'ducky' for duck races in the park.

Hundreds of people came out to cheer on their ducks as they sailed down the brook in Memorial Park.  Run by the South Orange/Maplewood Kiwanis Club, the proceeds from the event are distributed to local programs involving children.  Local businesses donated prizes and sponsored the race with lawn signs spread around the brook.  There were six races with 600 ducks in each. Each race had 12 chances to win! Winners walked away with ipods, televisions, gift certificates, toys and more! This year, on the back of each ticket, was a tribute in loving memory of Ellie Gianni, who helped to coordinate the duck races every year.  The race was dedicated to her, and to her daughter-in-law Francine, who both passed away this Spring.

Maple Leaf Awards Honor Service Organizations

On April 15 at L'Affaire in Mountainside, the Maplewood Civic Association honored the Elks, Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary and VFW.

Instead the event took place at L'Affaire on Route 22 in Mountainside on Sunday, April 15, with a "Mimosa Brunch" at 1:30 p.m. Second, the Awards — which are sponsored by the Maplewood Civic Association — are usually given to two or three individual volunteers in the community. However, this year, the Awards recognized many, many volunteers by honoring the town's volunteer service organizations — the Maplewood/South Orange Elks, the Maplewood Kiwanis, the Maplewood Lions, the Maplewood Rotary and the Maplewood VFW. As Maple Leaf Award Committee Chair Mary Devon O'Brien …

Kiwanis Dedicate Bench in Maplewood's Memorial Park

The bench was dedicated to Rudy and Charlotte Mathias.

On April 6, South Orange and Maplewood Kiwanis and Maplewood Civic Association members dedicated a bench to the Kiwanis' long-time distinguished secretary and his wife — the late Rudy and Charlotte Mathias. The Mathiases were also members of the Maplewood Civic Association.

Photos: Kiwanis Duck Race Memories

A look back at a duck race from a past year.

Last week Patch put up a call for photos of past Memorial Day Parades. Unfortunately, we didn't get any takers. However, Patch reader Sharon Stewart had some photos of the Kiwanis 2005 Duck Race that she was happy to share with us. So, big thanks to Sharon for the photos. Now, if you're new in town or haven't been to the duck races before, here's what you can expect. Enjoy! (And remember, Monday's race starts right after the parade and the Memorial Day speeches are over.)
