Every Child Deserves a Community Like Maplewood

Dr. Jane Aronson heads to Haiti, where Worldwide Orphans will hold a soccer tournament in memory of Kohl Angelo.

What happens when an orphan dies?  I live in a community, Maplewood, where people care deeply about one another and when a young boy in our hometown was diagnosed with a brain tumor nine months ago, everyone mobilized and made a plan to support the family. This 12- year-old triplet boy, Kohl, died in the early hours of July 24 and left his family and friends devastated and reeling with loss. We all watched him work hard to heal and fight to live, but this brain stem tumor called DIPG is a vicious unstoppable cancer even with treatment at top medical centers in the U.S. Kohl was relentlessly brave and so were his parents and brothers. Meals were made for the family and left systematically at the family’s home and the “Caring Bridge” helped …

Makos Learn More Than Just Swimming

Maplewood's local summer swim team is giving back to the community in a big way.

The Maplewood Makos swim team might not be winning every match — so far the team boasts a 3-4 record — but they are having a terrific summer all the same. "It's all about the team spirit and the pool community for these kids," said Jennifer Coleman, mother to team members Grant Thieroff, 13, and Gillian Thieroff, 11. "All one has to do is attend a swim meet or early morning practice to witness that winning attitude."  Coach Carly Orpurt Buckholtz and her crew of assistant coaches do a amazing job of sharing their love of swimming and good sportsmanship with the children, according to Coleman. "These coaches work on more than improving swim technique," Buckholtz said. "They set an example for the team of the importance of giving back to our…
