Rave review from food critic.
Lorena's in Maplewood recently received a glowing review in New Jersey Monthly. Food critic Rosie Saferstein called the restaurant a "delight" and lauded its "impeccable service and exceptional food." She singled out many dishes, including puree of butternut squash soup with huckleberries and brioche crouton; warm jumbo lump crabmeat and wild mushroom crepe; roasted chicken breast with wild mushrooms, spinach, celery-root purée and truffle broth; apple tart with almond purée, apple chip and apple cider reduction, and warm pear, almond and rum raisin brioche bread pudding with caramel sauce. For those still without plans for Turkey Day, here is one (beautifully civilized and luxurious) option: Restaurant Lorena's in Maplewood Village, the fine French restaurant consistently rated one of the best restaurants in the area, will be open on Thanksgiving Day. This is the first time the seven-year-old restaurant will be open on the holiday. "Lorena and I decided to open because not only was there demand, but the birth of our son Liam Thomas really opened my eyes to the sense of giving, and that is what Thanksgiving is all about," said chef-owner Humberto Campos, Jr., referring to his wife and partner. Summer bounty is on the menu and the table
Lorena's, the award-winning Maplewood eatery, debuts a "Farm to Table" menu for early summer. The restaurant sources food from local organic, sustainable, and environmentally conscious New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania farms, according to the menu -- and so says chef Humberto Campos, Jr. Campos was profiled last year by Teresa Politano, whose book, Celebrity Chefs of New Jersey, was published by Rutgers University Press. Campos has seen his diners’ interest in the preparation of what they eat grow, as chef memoirs and “behind the scenes” books proliferate. “We see more interest in our open kitchen,” said Campos. “People ask more questions.” Likewise, Campos himself has read a few such books, including Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen …
