Maplewood girl gets enough viewer votes to carry her through to the next round of the competition.
Update, 11/15: Beatrice Miller made it through another round of competition on Thursday night's THE X FACTOR, as two other acts were eliminated on the live show. Miller garnered enough viewer votes after her performance on Wednesday night's show to secure a position as a top ten finalist. She was ranked in 8th place in viewer votes, up two spots from last week. The Maplewood Middle School HSA is arranging a public screening of THE X FACTOR on Wednesday from 8 p.m. - 10 p.m. in the MMS auditorium to show support for Maplewood resident -- and MMS 8th grader -- Beatrice (Bea) Miller, one of 13 finalists in the singing competition. School will open for a shorter day
Maplewood Middle School students will have classes on Wednesday in three different locations. What follows is an email sent by Principal Jeff Truppo to affected families this evening: Dear MMS Community Member, As I write to you this evening, Maplewood Middle School remains without power. However, we have secured a place for each of our grade levels so that classes can resume tomorrow, Wednesday, November 7. The following locations, with corresponding times, will be used for each of our three grade levels until we can go back to MMS. Grade 6 will go to The Montrose School Building from 8:30am to 1:30pm, at 365 Clark Street, South Orange. After-school program continues to grow for middle school students in Maplewood and South Orange.
Here in Maplewood and South Orange there’s a thriving, exciting after-school network advancing the social and intellectual development of our youth. YouthNet, now entering its fifth year, offers an after-school learning opportunity at South Orange Middle School and Maplewood Middle School, staffed entirely by district teachers. At YouthNet’s core are more than 30 after school enrichment activities offered free of charge, along with a fee-based developmental program for focus on homework help and tutoring. Far from being just custodial, YouthNet has measured its success by advancing the learning and life training skill sets of our students with its programs, helping them broaden their participation in both social and work settings. …

A special Board of Education meeting has been scheduled for Monday evening, May 7 at 8:00 pm to discuss the proposed Maplewood Middle School addition. The meeting will take place in the Maplewood Middle School auditorium. The meeting will later be televised on the local cable network on Thursday, May 10 and will also be accessible at that time through the District website www.somsd.k12.nj.us (go to the “District Info” tab then scroll down to the “South Orange & Maplewood Television on the Web” link on the left). There’s a lot of life in the middle schools after 3 p.m. It was well after the final bell had rung at South Orange Middle School, but the inviting smell of popcorn was everywhere. But if you wanted to partake, the cafeteria was the wrong direction — the goods were to be had during the Animaniacs Club, one of YouthNet’s vibrant after school enrichment offerings. Diane Grant, a SOMS 6th grade science teacher and YouthNet instructor, delivers a movie and the traditional snacks to club members each Friday. “It really gives the kids time to unwind and socialize,” she said. “It let’s them see a movie and just have fun. MMS in Action Night lets September's sixth graders take a peek at their new school.
It was Maplewood Middle School's turn to show off on Thursday night with its School in Action Night. Part celebration and part presentation, the night celebrated the school's own as the school opened itself up to next year's sixth graders. There were also fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies, which could be smelled from a block away. More on that later. Prospective sixth graders and their parents wandered in and out of classrooms. A concerned parent was overheard asking, "Do you think you'll be able to find your way around?" (There was no response from the student.) Walls and classrooms were filled with current student work. Tuscan School Spring Concert a big success at Maplewood Middle School.
A very warm spring night made for a lovely evening for the Tuscan Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 24. With 30 orchestral students, 46 band members and a chorus numbering 170, the move from Tuscan Elementary School's auditorium to that of Maplewood Middle School was a necessity. Students arrived early dressed in black and white, as Tuscan music teacher Claire Van Tine called out directions. “Everyone has worked extremely hard,” said Van Tine during a momentary lull. “It shows just how strong and supported the arts are in this town.” Parents milled around as students found their places, their sheet music and maybe a missing mouth piece to a trombone that had fallen off and rolled under a seat.
