Flashdance Mob Hits Art Walk

Ricalton Square was the scene of a lively, dancing "flash mob" on Saturday.

A group of dancers hit the street to boogie for the crowds at Saturday's Maplewood Art Walk.  Check out the video, sent courtesy of the Maplewood Village Alliance's Julie Doran.

The Arts are Alive and Well in Maplewood

First annual Maplewood Art Walk was a huge hit.

The first annual Maplewood Art Walk on Saturday was a resounding success, to judge from the enthusiastic crowds that descended on the Village throughout the day. There were live performances of music, dance and theater in Ricalton Square. Scores of artists displayed and sold their work on Baker Street and Highland Place, both of which were closed to traffic.   Kids got in the action by helping to paint a mural. Local restaurants offered specials and there were pop-up outdoor cafes at Crane's/Highland Place and St. James Gate. Representatives from Maplewood's and South Orange's many cultural and civic organizations were on hand to give out information. There was even a flashdance mob -- video to come. The Laurel is Open!

New Maplewood restaurant opens just in time for Art Walk.

Maplewood's newest eatery, The Laurel, has opened its doors.  The rustic-chic cafe will serve lunch only on Saturday, and then will begin full service of breakfast, lunch and dinner next week. Stop by for a bite while strolling the village for today's Art Walk, which runs from 12-5 p.m.

The Maplewood Village Alliance released a map and performance schedule for the first annual Maplewood Art Walk, to be held on May 5 from noon-5 p.m.  Artist Erin Rogers Pickering -- whose work will be on display at the event -- created the map. For Art, Food, Shopping and More, Walk This Way

Maplewood's first ever Art Walk hits the streets on Saturday, May 5. You won't want to miss this.

Over the last few years, Maplewood has emerged as a thriving center for the arts as well as a hub of unique, independently-run shops and restaurants. So it was only a matter of time before someone figured out how to bring the two together. The result is the first annual Maplewood Art Walk, which will take place on Saturday, May 5 from noon until 5 p.m. Streets throughout the Village will be brimming with art, music, live performances, food and shopping. The event is co-sponsored by the Maplewood Village Alliance (MVA) and the Maplewood Arts Council (MAC).
