The first annual Maplewood Art Walk on Saturday was a resounding success, to judge from the enthusiastic crowds that descended on the Village throughout the day. There were live performances of music, dance and theater in Ricalton Square. Scores of artists displayed and sold their work on Baker Street and Highland Place, both of which were closed to traffic. Kids got in the action by helping to paint a mural. Local restaurants offered specials and there were pop-up outdoor cafes at Crane's/Highland Place and St. James Gate. Representatives from Maplewood's and South Orange's many cultural and civic organizations were on hand to give out information. There was even a flashdance mob -- video to come. New Maplewood restaurant opens just in time for Art Walk.
Maplewood's newest eatery, The Laurel, has opened its doors. The rustic-chic cafe will serve lunch only on Saturday, and then will begin full service of breakfast, lunch and dinner next week. Stop by for a bite while strolling the village for today's Art Walk, which runs from 12-5 p.m.
