Maplewood Pool Will Open Memorial Day Weekend

Responding to member requests, Township Committee votes 4-1 to start pool season early this year.

The Township Committee voted 4-1 Tuesday night to approve a pilot program to open the Maplewood Community Pool on Memorial Day weekend, and to add an additional $30 to membership rates to cover associated costs. The vote will be memorialized at the next meeting on March 5. Typically, the pool opens on Father's Day weekend. The new plan will mean the pool will be open for a total of seven additional days, or three extra weekends. Before the vote was taken, the four other committee members expressed concerns with the amount of the increase and with raising the membership rates on the heels of last year's 30 percent increase.  (Last year, fees increased to pay for more than $1 million in bonds issued to pay for improvements including new …

Maplewood Rec Department Hosts Senior Picnic

Popular annual event drew a large crowd.

The Maplewood Recreation Department, with help from Deputy Mayor Kathleen Leventhal and Township Administrator Joseph Manning, hosted its 35th Annual Senior Citizen Picnic at the Maplewood Community Pool on Sept. 6. There were 70 seniors in attendance, said Recreation Director Keith Knudsen. The picnic featured hamburgers and hotdogs with all the fixings along with salads and ice cream, catered by Freeman’s Fish Market. Participants enjoyed swimming in the pools, live music from “Funtime Band” and country line dancing with Ann Gross.  "It was a wonderful event this year," said Knudsen, and we are looking forward to next year’s picnic."

Township Takes Steps to Combat Trash, Prevent Rodents

New ordinances address Maplewood's litter and garbage issues; plus an update on rat activity.

Under the township’s new ordinances, village restaurants would have to have four trash pick ups a week and it would be against the law to sweep trash or litter into street gutters. The Maplewood Township Committee considered two ordinances at Tuesday night’s meeting that are intended to address complaints about the town’s trash and litter problems. Maplewood Health Officer Robert Roe said before the meeting that the township decided to be more stringent about trash rules to maintain sanitation and prevent mice and rats. “It’s all about food,” said Roe, who noted the increase in restaurants in the Village.  Most business owners seem to be in favor of the additional garbage pickups, Roe said, despite the increased cost.  The first ordinance…

I wonder where the new burrow is. Especially since our other neighbor was given notice last year to get to the bottom of his own rat infested wood pile. Roe was wonderful and diligent in treating the area, but the wood pile still stands high as the neighbor still after over a year, hasn't gotten to the bottom of it. In my opinion, he should be fined each month until he stores it properly. Why …   more ›

SCUBA Comes to Maplewood Pool

New program will offer lessons and certification.

For the first time, the Maplewood Community Pool will offer SCUBA lessons and certification for residents 12 and older. The program, held in conjunction with Underwater Adventures (UA) in Millburn, will take place on Friday, Aug. 3 from 6-9 p.m., and from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, and Sunday, Aug. 5. UA is making it possible at a significantly discounted price person of $279, plus the cost of materials. (If there are at least 12 students the price will go down to $249.) UA will also offer a 15% discount on materials and equipment for those who sign up.  "To be able to do this so close to home for this price, and in a 16-foot deep diving tank, is a great opportunity," said David Buckley, Maplewood Pool committee member.  The instructor …

Pool Accidents Injure Teenagers

Two teenagers injured in separate pool incidents over the weekend.

Maplewood fire officials responded to two separate incidents Sunday where two teens were injured and taken to the hospital. In the first incident at the township pool, Maplewood Fire Capt. Joe Callaghan said, a teenager attempted to do a back flip off a diving board.  The teen hit his head on the board and received at 7-inch gash to his head, Callaghan said. He was reported to be both alert and conscious, Callaghan said, but was dazed. The youth was transferred to the trauma unit at University Hospital in Newark. In the second incident, a teenager was injured when he dove into a Boyden Avenue pool and allegedly struck his head on the side of the pool and could not feel his extremities. Several other teenagers at the home saw the incident …

We can never tell when and where danger will strike. We can never know for sure who to watch out for. All we can do is take precautionary measures if ever there is emergency that may require police, fire or ambulatory assistance. We should have in hand a very effective way of calling for and getting help the soonest possible time. That's why when I happen to bump onto this application while …   more ›

No Lines to Enter Pool on Thursday

On a second day of extreme temperatures, Maplewood Pool had the crowds under control.

After suffering through long lines to enter the Maplewood Community Pool at its 3 p.m. opening on June 20, patrons found it much faster to get into the pool on Thursday, June 21. On Wednesday, some reported to Patch that they were waiting in line as long as 25 to 30 minutes to enter the pool complex. Most locals who emailed Patch were sanguine about the wait, saying they understood that the circumstances were extreme and that they used the wait time to catch up with friends in the parking lot. Others lamented the wait in a "scorching" hot parking lot without shade and questioned why pool management just didn't wave through everyone who flashed a badge. Township Committeeman Jerry Ryan, who is liaison to the Recreation Department, explained…

Sliding Into Summer

The mayor and kids inaugurate the new water slides at the grand re-opening of the Maplewood Community Pool.

I never thought that one of my favorite places in Maplewood could get any better until today. There are water slides at The Maplewood Pool. Jessie and James Gonon were lined up at the front door by 9:45 a.m. to keep their record in tact, and be the first one in the pool for the fourth year in a row.  Today, they may have begun a new record, by being the first ones down the water slides as well. Minalee Carson, always one of the first pool goers of the season sang, "It's the most wonderful time of the year" as she posed for photos with Eric Atkins.  The pool has a new deck, a ramp leading into the main pool and two water slides, one inclosed and one open. To go down the sides you must be at least 48 inches and the lines were growing with …

Photo of the Day: Maplewood Pool Is Filled

The pool water now needs a week to filter, meaning that all will be ready to go well before the June 16 opening date.

Fresh from the camera of Mayor Vic De Luca comes this photo, taken early afternoon on May 27, of the Maplewood Community Pool being filled after a winter of extensive renovations including the installation of new drainage, deck and water slides. The improvements are being paid for by an increase in pool fees. The water will need to filter for one week before the pool can be used. Does this mean that the Community Pool will be able to accommodate the 5th grade pool parties that have tentatively been moved to the Maplewood Country Club? "It is a matter of timing. I hope we can accommodate them at the town pool the week of June 11," said De Luca. The pool is scheduled to open to members on June 16.

I also agree to the shade situation. I think it's ridiculous that you have to be in super early to get a seat in the shade. Bathrooms have to be a priority too. I am not sure about the mens's bathroom but the ladies need a change.   more ›
