Best plant sale in the area returns for 76th year.
This article originally ran on May 8. It's almost time for the 76th annual Maplewood Garden Club’s Annual Plant Sale, widely recognized as the best plant sale of the year. This year, the sale is on the days leading up to Mother's Day - so moms can put some plants on their wish list. The selection is exceptional, with annuals, perennials, woodland plants, herbs, vegetables, heirloom tomatoes, hanging baskets, member-grown plants and houseplants, all at excellent prices. Friendly and knowledgeable Garden Club members are on hand to give help and advice. The club kicks off the season with a walk through its beautiful gardens.
At the beginning of every season the Maplewood Garden Club hosts its annual garden walk for members and guests to inspire members to get creative in their own gardens over the year. This year was the 25th anniversary of the walk. "It provides an opportunity for our member to socialize also," a spokesperson for the club, Nancy Schwartz, said. The club doesn't just create these gardening arts for itself, it gives back to the community. The MapleFood garden, pictured, donated 600 pounds of food last year to a food pantry at the Lady of Sorrows in South Orange. The club has an harb garden and a youth garden program. The Maplewood Garden Club will celebrate the official opening of the Hilton Rain Garden with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, June 2 at 11:30 am next to the Maplewood Memorial Library Hilton Branch. One of the largest rain gardens in New Jersey, funded by a $10,000 environmental grant from NJ American Water (NJAWC) and built by the Maplewood Garden Club with the help of Maplewood Township, the rain garden is expected to recharge about 167,000 gallons of water into our ground water aquifers each year. So far, in 2012 it has been meeting the challenge without difficulty. Representatives from the Garden Club, the Township and NJAWC will be present to join in the opening ceremony. Gardeners, we know you have been waiting all year for this. The Maplewood Garden Club's 75th Annual Plant Sale kicks off on Thursday, May 10 from noon - 8 p.m. The sale continues on Friday, May 11 from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. and concludes on Saturday, May 12 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. It is held at the Maplewood Community Pool parking lot at 187 Boyden Avenue, and will run rain or shine. Proceeds from the sale, which The Star-Ledger dubbed the "Big Momma" of community plant sales in New Jersey, support the club's activites in Maplewood, including scholarships, beautification, youth gardening and education.
