Hundreds gather for music, activities and birthday cake to toast library's centennial.
Today, April 30 is the official 100th birthday of the Maplewood Memorial Library. To commemorate the occasion, staff at both the Main Branch and the Hilton Branch hosted family-friendly events complete with live music from a local band, face painting and a very special birthday cake. At the Main Branch, the band was 'The Collectives,' comprised of Columbia High School sophomores Jack Goldberg, Sam Gomberg and Zack Hienz. The cake -- a vanilla sheet cake with raspberry jam and buttercream -- was baked by The Able Baker. Library Director Sarah Lester and Board President Katherine Hilaire thanked visitors for being there and reminded them about the upcoming Centennial Quiz Show on May 23, one of several events planned for this year. Maplewood Memorial Library hosts sale Saturday and Sunday.
The Maplewood Memorial Library will host the annual Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale at 51 Baker St., on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 28 from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Here's what you'll find: hardbacks and paperbacks including fiction, mystery, children's, tweens, history, science, cooking, crafts, sports, and much more, plus books-on-tape, DVDs, videotapes, CDs -- all at bargain prices. Sunday is a bag-of-books sale, and entry will be through the back door from the parking lot only. Scores of children participated in the Maplewood Memorial Library's inaugural Lego Build Off last weekend. Participants built creations with Legos supplied by the library. Creations were judged by local community members, including Deputy Mayor Kathleen Leventhal, and are now on display at the library's main branch.

Centennial will be celebrated with special events throughout the year.
The Maplewood Memorial Library will turn 100 years old this month, and the town is planning a year of activities and events to celebrate this key milestone in the life of the town. "We are kicking off our centennial festivities with birthday cake, games, prizes and music at both the Main Library and Hilton Branch Library on Tuesday, April 30 at 4 p.m.," said Library Director Sarah Lester in a recent interview. The Library Board of Trustees will present "The Centennial Quiz" on Thursday, May 23 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at Columbia High School. Words Bookstore and Maplewood Memorial Library will host events.
World Book Night is an annual, global campaign to give away thousands of free books to encourage non-readers to read. Held this year on April 23, the event will mobilize 25,000 volunteers in more than 6,000 towns and cities nationwide to distribute half a million free books. Volunteer book lovers help promote reading by going out into their communities and sharing free copies of books they love. The mission of World Book Night is to seek out those without the means or access to printed books. In Maplewood, registered volunteers from the Words Bookstore community will be distributing books in such diverse locations as VA hospitals, roller skating rinks, mass transit, nursing homes, schools, and food pantries. Spring Book Sale is on the horizon.
The Maplewood Memorial Library is currently accepting book donations for the annual Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale. The sale will be held at Maplewood Memorial Library, 51 Baker St., on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 28 from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Books may be brought to the door to the right of the main entrance, behind the flagpole. No textbooks, encyclopedias, magazines or mildewed books. Weekend event at Maplewood Memorial Library
On Saturday, the Maplewood Memorial Library hosted a reception with live music to celebrate its Black History Month art exhibits. Artists Cathleen McCoy Bristol and Ahmondylla Best were featured. Music was provided by Cedric Miller and student drum circle.

The Maplewood Memorial Library is hosting Look Inside Look Outside: The World Through African American Artists' Eyes, which explores the world from the perspective of black artists. Participants will learn about famous artists and create their own works of art in the library's craft workshops, which are offered throughout the month. People can also join the Look Inside/Look Outside Reading Club and have the opportunity to earn prizes. Signup for the reading club is in the children's room.
