Documentary aims to end sexism in media; will be at Maplewood Theater May 21.
HK Project will host a local screening of Miss Representation on May 21 at the Maplewood Theater. In advance of release of new Star Trek movie, Maplewood Theater is hosting sci-fi costume contest and vintage memorabilia sale to benefit South Mountain YMCA on May 11.
The Maplewood Theater is hosting a Sci-Fi Costume Contest on Saturday, May 11 at 10:30 a.m., as a run up to the May 17 release of Star Trek into Darkness. Contest entrants will be judged and winners will receive prizes. "I have heard about people who are planning to come and the costumes sound amazing," said the theater's general manager Susan Rinaldi, who is organizing the event. "We will also be opening the 'Sci-Fi General Store' where vintage items can be purchased from many different sci-fi movies and television shows," said Rinaldi. Rinaldi is selling her 40-year collection and donating half the proceeds to the South Mountain YMCA. School is back in regular session in South Orange - Maplewood this week. (Also, the district recently announced a new calendar for the current school year.) The Capital Plan Community Forum that was rescheduled to November 27 has been cancelled. According to district representatives, it will take place sometime in the spring. Spiffy new surface makes an impression in the Village.
The Maplewood Theater recently received a gleaming new stucco facade that mirrors the terracotta tiles of the rest of the building. The theater has been in operation in the Village for over 20 years, and the building itself, which also houses Roman Gourmet, Freeman's Fish and other businesses, is over 80 years old. It's a handcrafted means to making an animated movie, and based on critics' reviews, "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" is a stop-motion winner. Not sure what stop-motion animation is? Think back to "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", circa 1964. Or the 2009 films "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and "Coraline". From the producers of the 2000 stop-motion flick "Chicken Run" comes a pirate tale in which the generically named Pirate Captain (voiced by Hugh Grant) is on a mission to thwart his rivals and win the award for Pirate of the Year.
