CHS Alum, Poet Earns National Prize

David Ferry

David Ferry, Columbia High School Class of 1942, has won the National Book Award for Bewilderment, a book of poetry. Ferry was born in Orange, raised on Yale Street in Maplewood, and writes about the South Orange - Maplewood community in his work. Ferry, a poet and translator, is Sophie Chantal Hart Professor of English, Emeritus, at Wellesley College. Born in 1924, he graduated from Amherst College and Harvard University, and served as a Sergeant in the United States Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946. What's less well known about Ferry is that his CHS years included a spell with the Parnassian Society, the Glee Club and the Senior Play. His yearbook entry (see photo) refers to him as "Dave." Columbia HS Grad Scores National Book Award

David Ferry won a National Book Award

Updated: David Ferry won the National Book Award. A further story is in the works.    A Columbia High School graduate is a National Book Award winner. David Ferry's “Bewilderment: New Poems and Translations,” was one of four finalists announced in the Poetry Category. Ferry was born in Orange, New Jersey in 1924, and graduated from Columbia High School and Amherst College.  Ferry earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University. Ferry's work competes with  “Heavenly Bodies,” by Cynthia Huntington; “Fast Animal,” by Tim Seibles; “Night of the Republic,” by Alan Shapiro; and “Meme,” by Susan Wheeler. Winners in each of four categories (Fiction, Non-fiction, Young Adult, and Poetry) will be announced Nov. 14 in New York. Each receives $10,000. Patch …
