Local Woman Indicted for Fatally Tossing Dog into Traffic

Act of animal cruelty stemmed from argument over parking spot

A Newark woman who is accused of fatally throwing her neighbor's dog into the oncoming traffic during an argument over a parking spot was hit Wednesday with a four-count indictment, authorities said. Haniyyah Barnes, 25, was indicted by an Essex County Grand Jury on charges of second degree burglary, third degree animal cruelty, third degree theft and third degree criminal mischief, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. In August 2011, Barnes allegedly forced her way into the unidentified neighbor's home and threatened and assaulted the victim over a parking space. When 2-year-old Shih Tzu named Honey Bey ran into the room and barked at her, she grabbed the dog by the throat, ran outside and threw it into oncoming traffic …

We walked around with a camera, looking for parking spots. We chose to do this at 2 p.m., because it's the end of the lunch rush and before school lets out, and in part because the idea occured to us at 1:45. The Committee considers changes to the town Web site and (gasp!) parking meters for downtown

At its Feb. 3 meeting, Maplewood's Township Committee discused the town's future on the Web and on its roads. The Committee passed two resolutions governing town driving regulations, and proposed increased parking regulation enforcement and volleyed ideas for changes to the town's Web site. The Committee unanimously passed an ordinance that places Yield signs on the intersections of Inwood Place and Woodland Road, Durand Road and Maplewood Ave., Harvard Ave. and Rutgers St. and Shaefer Road and Newark Way. Likewise, an ordinance barring drivers from making a right on red from Baker Street onto Valley St. was passed unanimously. The lone note of dissent was when Mayor Vic DeLuca asked Township Administrator Joseph Manning to make a six …
