A pizza taste-test in Maplewood Village? Locals have their favorites that they swear by, and I was probably going to face some level of stoning (or saucing) for picking a winner out of the three heavy-hitting contenders: Arturo’s, Roman Gourmet, and Village Trattoria. Clearly it was going to be a tough job, but somebody had to do it. The Mission: A blind taste-test (a cheese pie head-to-head-to-head for the baseline and a specialty meat pie head-to-head-to-head for best overall composition) The Criteria: Sauce flavor, crust texture and flavor, cheese/toppings level, grease factor and slice tip droopage The Contenders: Arturo’s Osteria & Pizzeria, The Roman Gourmet Restaurant, and Village Trattoria Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria The Judges: …

A Union man reportedly used a fake gun in an incident with a pizza place's driver.
Maplewood police say that early morning on Sunday, July 19, an armed man threatened a pizzeria's driver near Springfield Avenue and Yale Street. Glenn Singletary was later arrested in connection with the incident, and reportedly found to be in possession of a silver replica handgun. The 43-year-old Union resident fit the description of the man who threatened the driver, and was seen by a police patrolman near Rutgers Street. Singletary reportedly resisted arrested and allegedly engaged with the office in a brief struggle. Maplewood police charged Singletary with Possession of a Simulation Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, Terroristic Threats, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Resisting Arrest. He was later brought to Essex County Jail.

Equipped with two glowing wood-burning ovens and a loyal, best-pizza-in-New Jersey fan base, this place takes its pies and pastas very seriously. Don't judge it by the low-key, neighborhood ambiance—wobbly wood tables and plenty of high chairs may pack the front of the house, but the action in the kitchen is careful and apt. Arturo's offers guests a choice of two crusts: classic thin—their signature crust—and a "traditional" slightly thicker, New York style. Although …

Of course everyone has their favorites, and the consistency day-to-day is just as important to me as any single experience. Based on that, I go with Roman Gourmet first, Arturo's second and Trattoria a distant third. Thanks for the testing, and I hope a rematch can be done after enough time has gone by, maybe adding Maplewood Pizzeria in next time.   more ›
