Walgreens Plan Passes Planning Board

The board unanimously votes in favor of the proposed Walgreens site.

At the end of its third meeting on the matter, and after several concessions by the developer and a protracted debate among township officials about the viability of 24-hour businesses in Maplewood, the developer’s application for a new Walgreens store on Springfield Avenue was unanimously passed by the Planning Board on Tuesday. The redevelopment plan still needs to be approved by the Township Committee, and, contingent on that approval, construction could begin as early as September. The meeting opened with Peter Steck, a certified planner for the developers, who outlined the “deviations and variances” the developers were requesting for the property. Chief among the requests was permission to install a sign exceeding the size limits set …

Walgreens Developers in Front of Planning Board Again

Walgreens faces continued opposition despite concessions.

Architects, engineers, and corporate representatives from Walgreens faced a battery of questions at last night’s meeting of the planning board, as the Springfield Avenue location appears to be only slightly closer to becoming a reality. Members of the Maplewood Township’s planning board, as well as residents, were primarily concerned about increased traffic from customers and delivery trucks, lighting issues and security. Walgreens architects have changed the site plan on issues ranging from door appearances to the distance the building will be from the bordering residential properties. “It has been a very complicated project, but in the end it paid off. Special Planning Meeting for Walgreens Announced

The Planning Board convenes on July 30 to discuss the Springfield Avenue pharmacy.

The Planning Board will hold a special meeting on July 30 to continue the presentation by the developers behind the proposed Walgreens on Springfield Avenue. The developers presented plans and answered questions at the most recent regular meeting of the Planning Board, held July 15. The plans for the store have been met with controversy. Residents in the neighborhood near the proposed Walgreens site worry about the noise, the store’s effect on traffic and the possibility that the store will be open 24 hours. Earlier this month, Walgreens said they would cancel plans for the Springfield Avenue store if a proposed Maplewood ordinance limiting business hours of operation passed. The meeting will be held at the Township Municipal Building. The…

Springfield Avenue Walgreens Debated

No conclusions were reached for the proposed pharmacy at the July 14 Planning Board Meeting.

The plans for the proposed Walgreens site on Springfield Avenue remain up in the air after a long Planning Board meeting on Tuesday evening. The meeting was ended before the developers presented their complete argument, and will be continued at a meeting for which a date has not been set. Tensions between residents of homes near the proposed Walgreens and the developers were evident. Several homeowners attended the meeting and voiced objections to the plans outlined by 1633 Springfield Ave., the developers behind the project. Residents say the plan for the site have changed for the worse since it was first proposed earlier this year. In the initial discussions about the pharmacy, Walgreens developers assured residents the store would not …
