Strong Summer Could Lead to Big Winter

Columbia swim teams could be looking at a successful winter after a strong summer campaign

Members and coaches of the Columbiaswimming teams must have liked what they saw this summer out of the South Orange Dolphins and the Maplewood Makos. The Dolphins finished with a 6-2 dual meet record and had a fantastic showing at the Meet of Champions, with Venkatesh and Priya Duvvuri taking first place in multiple races. The Makos were 5-3, for their first winning season in eight years. This winter, another Duvvuri will be added to the team as Krishna, who also had a strong summer, will be going into his freshman year. The boys team already has momentum in its favor. The Cougars went 6-4 last year, picking up their first winning season in 18 years. Also, with the realignment taking effect, the locals won’t have to face Morris County …

Makos End Season at MOC

Maplewood swimmers finish 18th overall.

The Maplewood Makos had already had their most successful summer in recent memory before the first gun sounded in New Providence for the Meet of Champions. At the day’s end, while they did not have the results they might’ve hoped for, the Makos have certainly shown tremendous improvement under first year summer league coach, Carly Orpurt. The locals finished with 238 points, 18th out of 20, behind a strong performance from Jared Kovacs, and a sixth place finish from the Maplewood 12 and under freestyle relay team, for which Kovacs swam the second leg, and his brother Hunter, swam the anchor. Jared first scored a fifth place finish in the 11-12 freestyle and followed it with a hard-fought seventh place performance in the breaststroke. …

Maplewood Falls Just Short at Home

Makos lost by one to undefeated Springfield.

They were this close, but a couple of missing swimmers and a technicality in the rule book kept the Maplewood Makos from handing the Springfield summer swim team its first loss of the season. The locals lost a tough one, 223-222, at the Maplewood Community pool this morning, but for those who watched this meet from the beginning, few would have thought Maplewood would come within one. Springfield jumped out to an early lead, and was ahead throughout. With the meet seemingly in hand for the visiting Springfield squad, the Makos’ relay teams made things interesting, storming back to take all seven of the races.
