Essex County Declares State of Emergency, PSE&G Poised to Respond

No significant power outages have been reported as of noon Friday, but storm expected to last into early morning Saturday.

No significant power outages have been reported in Essex County a few hours into Friday's Winter Storm, but PSE&G is ready to respond to what could be widespread outages throughout its service area, the utility said in advance of the Nor'easter. Contractors, including tree crews, are poised and ready and additional supplies, such as poles, transformer and other equipment, are on hand, PSE&G said. The Nor’easter could dump more than a foot of snow and bring heavy winds to Essex County, where widespread, long-term outages caused by Superstorm Sandy are still fresh on many residents’ minds. Essex County has declared a state of emergency, according to the county’s Office of Emergency Management. No parking will be allowed on country roads …

UPDATED: Power Out Again -- Briefly -- in Maplewood

Tuscan section and some of Hilton area lost power for several hours Tuesday morning.

  Update, 10:59 a.m.: PSE&G spokesperson Kristine Snodgrass told Patch that there were a total of 1,700 outages this morning in Maplewood and that all customers have been fully restored. PSE&G is currently patrolling the area. The company is still investigating the cause of the incident, but it appears to have been a "circuit outage." One potential cause is "residual effects from Sandy coupled with today's (rainy) weather," but that is not confirmed, said Snodgrass. A large section of Maplewood lost power early Tuesday morning in the area roughly bordered by Prospect Street to Maplecrest Park, and Elmwood Avenue to Burnett Avenue. Power Outages From Sandy Could Impact Election

Widespread loss of power and flooded polling sites are a possibility as Hurricane Sandy threatens state.

Hurricane Sandy could leave polling sites without power on Election Day with utility companies reporting it may take a week or more to restore widespread outages.  With the storm just beginning to hit northern New Jersey, Essex County Clerk Chris Durkin said Monday the question of whether voting will be affected by Sandy has weighed heavily on his mind.  Durkin said in a worst-case scenario where there is a widespread loss of power and flooded polling sites, the state legislature would decide what action to take. “If there is an issue with power,” Durkin said, “it is the New Jersey Legislature that decides on the alternatives as far as what we do."
