Chemical Spill in Lightning Brook

An unidentified substance is discharged into a brook leading to the Rahway River.

Correction: Lightning Brook is not part of the Rahway system. It flows into the Elizabeth River and then into Arthur Kill and Newark Bay, according to Bob McCoy, Chair, Maplewood Environmental Advisory Committee. The Maplewood Fire Department discovered a type of petroleum distillate in a section of Lightning Brook off Chancellor Avenue, prompting an environmental clean up by a hazmat crew, according to Deputy Chief Joseph Callaghan. A Chancellor Avenue resident called the fire department on Friday to report a strong odor emanating from the Lightning Brook, which passes through the eastern border of Maplewood, said Callaghan. Mayors Council Meets Tonight In Cranford

Millburn's mayor along with other members will share updates about U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project South Mountain Regional Detention Basin.

The Mayors Council Rahway River Watershed Flood Control meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Cranford Municipal Building, 8 Springfield Ave. The council will update residents on the progress of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers evaluation of flood mitigation projects including the development of the South Mountain Regional Detention Basin.  "Most New Jerseyans hearts go out to residents of the shore and the state and federal government have  to be  strong partners in rebuilding," said Dan Aschenbach, former Cranford mayor.  "We do have to remind the Governor and State Legislature, however, that we are not minced meat and should not be forgotten with regards to  the funding needs to move ahead with flood control," he said…

10 Suggestions to Reduce Rahway River Runoff

The Rahway River Watershed Storm Water Mangement Conference in Millburn educated officials from townships affected by the river.

  Storm water management experts proposed ten regional practices to deal with water infiltration for the 24 municipalities affected by the Rahway River watershed, which spans three counties, Essex, Morris and Union, in Thursday evening's conference. Millburn Mayor Sandra Haimoff welcomed other township officials to the Millburn Library, saying they could prevent overflowing of the Rahway River by working together. The Rahway River Watershed Storm Water Management Conference educated township officials with presentations from Sandy Batty, executive director of Association of New Jersey Environmental Commission and Dr. Chris Obropta, Dr. Amy Rowe and Michel Bakacs from Rutgers.  The Rutgers' presentations gave possible small steps townships …

Flood Control Tops Mayors' List Of Priorities

The next meeting of the Mayors' Council on Rahway River Flood Control will focus on gaining legislative support for proposed projects.

Volunteers from the Cranford River Maintenance Committee found a tee marker from the Maplewood Country Club in the river in Cranford the same week the Mayors' Council on Rahway River Watershed Flood Control requested that the East Branch of the Rahway River be included in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' study of storage areas. The East Branch flows through Orange, West Orange, South Orange and Maplewood before its connects with the West Branch at Millburn, Union and Springfield. Any reduction due to storage would help downstream communities including Cranford and Rahway.
