Voters chose Lotus Petals as their favorite florist.

Owner Peggy Excell-Stone was pleased and gratified. "This is what I strive for," said Excell-Stone. What's Your Favorite Bagel Place?

New Jersey residents love their bagels with a passion. Where do you get your favorite bagels?

Some people think of a bagel as just a plain old bread product in the shape of a circle and that every bagel is the same.  However, New Jersey residents know that is just not true.  A staple food of the state, bagels can come in all different types, sizes and shapes.  Some people like to have seeds on their bagel, such as sesame or poppy or the ever popular “everything bagel” which includes a mixture of it all. Some people like their bagels to be sweet with chocolate chips or raisons or even blueberries.  Some like their bagels with a kick and buy the types with onions or garlic; a few places even make them with jalapenos.  Then there are the old classics such as pumpernickel and egg bagels. Then there is the size and density of the bagel…

What about "Village Coffee Company" in Maplewood? That would be my vote (even if they aren't mainly a bagel shop).   more ›

Readers' Choice: Kicks N Sticks is a Favorite Sports Store

This Vauxhall store has everything you could ever need for soccer or lacrosse.

When it comes to sporting goods stores, voters love Kicks N Sticks in Vauxhall. The store won handily in our poll this week. Other local stores that garnered votes were were High Gear Cyclery and Sneaker Factory in Millburn and Bill's Army Navy in Short Hills. Kicks N Sticks, which specializes in soccer and lacrosse gear (hence the name), has been around since 1987. It's owned by Larry Martelli and Don Santora. Manager Rich Doherty has worked at the store for more than ten years. In fact, he used to get his sports equipment there when he was young. "I think what makes us successful is our credibility with the customer," said Doherty. "We make people feel comfortable and have a good time." The store draws customers from all over Essex …

I picked other because I go to both High Gear Cyclery for my bicycling needs and Sneaker Factory for running shoes, etc. Both are great and if you're even a semi-regular customer, they'll know who you are.   more ›

April 15 looms. Which local accountant or firm is going to get you to the finish line?

Sakura in Millburn Gets the Nod for Best Sushi

Readers voted on the best sushi in Maplewood, Millburn and South Orange.

With 27 percent of the vote, Sakura in Millburn scooped up the top spot in Patch's poll for the best sushi in Millburn, Maplewood and South Orange. Sakura won out with its consistent and tasty traditional sushi — as well as its Japanese noodle dishes, teriyakis and tempuras and fusion entrees. Sakura was followed by Ariyoshi in South Orange — which is well known for its giant, room-dividing fish tanks as well as special rolls with names like Superman and Dynamite — and Sapporo in Millburn which serves everything from bento boxes to boats of sushi and sashimi. Samurai Sushi in Millburn and Mt. Fuji in Maplewood tied for fourth. But a few wild fish jumped into the net: Several readers wrote in Zen in Livingston. "Salmon sashimi and the fat …
