Seth Boyden Installs New Playground Equipment

The "big castle" is just one piece of the comprehensive Outdoor Learning Center overhaul at the demonstration elementary school.

The following story was submitted by the Seth Boyden PTA: Seth Boyden School students are enjoying yet another new piece of playground equipment as part of a comprehensive overhaul of their school's Outdoor Learning Center continues to take shape. The equipment, installed two weeks ago, is officially called the "GameTime Powerscape PlaySystem," however, PTA Fundraising Chair Caryn Emmons said, "I hear that the kids have taken to calling it the Big Castle." The Big Castle is designed for use by children aged 5-12. The cost for the equipment was $37,025.  "It was originally $74,050," reported Emmons, "but I applied for the 'Back to School Playground Grant' with the playground equipment company and they awarded us 50% off." Shipping cost an …

Put Some Spring in Your Step with Seth Boyden 5K

Need to work off those winter pounds? A local 5k on April 20 will do the trick.

If you're looking for some exercise and the chance to support a good organization, look no further than the Seth Boyden's 3rd Annual 5K, taking place Saturday, April 20 in the South Mountain Reservation. This annual event — which raises funds for the Seth Boyden Demonstration School PTA — has become a tradition in its third year. The jaunt through the loop at the South Mountain Reservation (day-of registrants and those picking up t-shirts and numbers should report to the parking lot by the dog park) attracted 200 runners last year. The 5K race starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 20. The first 200 registrants get a $10 coupon for the Sneaker Factory in Millburn. This is a great race for first-timers and kids, but also attracts some who post…

Girl Scouts Clean Up South Mountain Reservation

Troop from Seth Boyden School tackles trash in the reservation.

Junior GS Troop 20648 from Seth Boyden Demonstration School, led by Tracey Woods - Trash Tackler Coordinator for the South Mountain Conservancy- spent Saturday morning spring cleaning at the South Mountain reservation.  They worked for an hour and a half clearing garbage and debris from the entry drive off of South Orange Avenue.  In that time the girls collected about four cubic yards of trash.  The troop was amazed at the amount of garbage they were able to collect in such a short period of time.  Bottles, cans, plastic bags, wheels, boots and even a stereo system were removed from the side of the road.  Maura Donnelly remarked, "I can't believe people just throw this stuff out of their car windows". "Why don't people just throw their …

Project Runway star looks to sell out CHS auditorium for school playground fundraiser.

It's a "make it work" moment for Seth Boyden School, as tickets are selling briskly for the second show in the Seth Boyden Series: A Conversation with Culture. The show — taking place Sunday, March 17 at Columbia High School — features Project Runway’s Tim Gunn in conversation with NY1-TV reporter and South Orange resident Budd Mishkin live on stage. Seth Boyden Raises the Roof for Outdoor Learning Center (PHOTOS)

A gala event on Feb. 23 at Orange Lawn Tennis Club raised $15,000 for new playground equipment and outdoor classroom experiences.

The Seth Boyden Demonstration School community is feeling pretty jazzed about a recent night of auctioning, dining and dancing that netted the PTA $15,000 toward the school's planned Outdoor Learning Center. The event, held on Feb. 23 at the Orange Lawn Tennis Club, was chaired by "the Caryns" — Caryn Emmons and Caryn Rosenberg. "The party was elegant, the bar was a blast, the food was excellent and the baskets were downright outrageous," wrote PTA member Patti Killian De Luca in an email to the Seth Boyden community (De Luca herself worked the event). "The chipper and satisfied murmurs from the auction audience told it all," continued De Luca, who praised PTA President Susie Adamson and the entire Auction Committee which included Kate …

Marionettes Illuminate the Artistry of Puppetry for Local Students

The Cashore Marrionettes visit Seth Boyden School.

On Feb. 20, something magical was taking place in the auditorium at Seth Boyden Demonstration School in Maplewood. Joseph Cashore was performing the scenes he had written and directed with the marionettes he had handcrafted. A horse played with a dragonfly. A mother comforted a baby. A monk fought distractions to meditation. Throughout it all, the children — and adults — in the auditorium were enraptured and delighted. Cashore and his marionettes were brought to the school through the PTA and the efforts of Mary Trinity of the Cultural Arts Committee. Fourth graders Grace Barry and Jenna Hayes had the opportunity to interview Cashore after the performance. Read their Q&A below.   By Grace Barry and Jenna Hayes The Cashore Marionettes came …

The Cat in the Hat is Back! (PHOTOS)

Seth Boyden School — and its principal — celebrate Read Across America in style.

Seth Boyden Demonstration School and its principal Mark Quiles brought the beloved Dr. Seuss tale of mischief “The Cat in the Hat” to life on Friday, March 1, 2013, as the school celebrated the NEA’s Read Across America Day.  Not only did some students sport the cat's trademark red-and-white-striped hat, but Quiles suited up in full Cat in the Hat regalia. Quiles said that he decided to don the costume “after some special requests.” The popular principal was available to read in classrooms through a sign-up sheet available on the counter outside the office. At 2:45 p.m., students from kindergarten through Grade 5 participated in a school-wide read. The entire student body went into the halls and read quietly for about 15-20 minutes. Even …

Tonight! Broadway Comes to Seth Boyden in Parent/Staff Talent Show

2nd Annual Seth Boyden Spotlight shines a light on local talent that has made it big time.

From the Oakland Ballet to Broadway, some parents at Seth Boyden Demonstration School have serious creative credentials. Take Charlie Pollock, for example. Pollock has originated roles on Broadway including Dwayne Rhodes in 9 to 5: The Musical. He's also played Bobby Strong on Broadway in Urinetown. But the bright lights of Broadway haven't gone to Pollock's head. Indeed, he'll be playing Maplewood later this month, performing a song from the musical "Once" at the 2nd Seth Boyden Spotlight Parent-Staff Talent Show on Friday, January 25 at the Seth Boyden Auditorium. Starting last year, talented parents and staffers at Seth Boyden — both amateur and professional — put their performing talents to good use for the school through a "Spotlight…
