Maplewood Village's Open Market to Be Held Rain or Shine

The annual event will go on in any weather.

The weather experts are warning that there's a soggy saturday in store for Maplewood. Despite the possible showers, Maplewood Village's annual open market will go forward mostly as planned, Little One & Co owner Hanh Truong said in an email sent on the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 11. If it does rain, the bands scheduled to play outdoors will have to take the day off, and some other activities may need to be canceled. The full message is below. Tomorrow's event is still happening - Rain or Shine!

I stopped by with my mini-shopper around 2 p.m. and, although it was not the uber-fest of May, folks were out and the bands were a-playing. Pretty festive and fun for a soggy Saturday!   more ›

Masonic Supply Shop Comes To Springfield Avenue

New store offers interesting and unique Items for browsing.

The multi-talented and engaging Tony E. Davis of Maplewood’s National Embroidery & Apparel has been in his new shop at 1703 Springfield Avenue, near the corner of Tuscan, for about six weeks.   The entrepreneurial Davis is a designer, inventor and a Master Mason.  He is also an embroidery and costume expert who makes and markets custom uniforms, regalia, dresses, sashes, collars, hats, jackets—you name it—for local Free Masons and for those across the U.S, as well as selling Masonic "jewels," emblems and patches and books. Since our somewhat unclear ideas of Free Masons were mainly formed by movies like “National Treasure” and various novels, we were happy to have Davis’ mini-lesson on the group.  “Freemasonry” he explained, “isn’t a …

Whole Foods Healthcare Fallout?

Local reactions to the national controversy stirred by Whole Foods CEO's Wall Street Journal health care op-ed are mixed.

Many progressive Whole Foods shoppers were shocked when CEO John Mackey wrote an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal that questioned the need for government-run health care. In the piece, headlined "The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare," Mackey said health care is not a constitutionally guaranteed right, and argued that health is largely a matter of individual responsibility. The piece caused a stir among healthcare advocates. Shoppers in Austin, Texas, and Berkeley, California, have picketed Whole Foods stores.  A “Boycott Whole Foods” Facebook group has almost 28,000 members. Locally, the reaction has been mixed. Some customers, initially drawn to Whole Foods for its politics as much as its food, have questioned their loyalty to…

Perch Home Receives National Honor

The Maplewood store is among 50 retailers praised by Home Accents Today magazine.

Maplewood Village shop Perch Home was named one of 50 Retail Stars for 2009 by the magazine Home Accents Today. Perch was picked for its successful marketing, its merchandising strength and its positive presence in the community. “It’s wonderful for a tiny shop like mine to get some national recognition,” Perch owner Michele Bessey said in a press statement. “I love what I do and hopefully some of that shows in the shop.”  Bessey opened the store in November of 2006 with hopes that customers would treat it “like a wonderful little secret you stumble upon.” The shop carries a mix of home accents, including furniture, jewelry and baby items. Along with Reynold’s Garden Shop in Manahawkin, Perch was one of two New Jersey stores that made the …

Girls Night Out On Despite Rain

Tonight’s Village Event goes forward regardless of the weather.

Forget the forecast. Tonight’s Girls Night Out promotional event is going on as planned. When asked if the event was still moving forward, the Maplewood Village Alliance’s village manager Amy Koehler responded quickly and emphatically. “Absolutely!” Koehler wrote in an email. She said she had been updating the Village’s accounts on Twitter and Facebook to assure people that the village event, which is offering promotions and discounts aimed mainly at women, was still happening. She said outdoor dining might be affected, but otherwise nothing is going to change. Perch owner and event co-organizer Michelle Bessey echoed Koehler's enthusiasm. "Rain or shine, the fun is inside," Bessey said. We’ve included a complete list of events and …
