Runners and Walkers Did the Turkey Trot

The first-ever South Orange turkey trot drew a crowd

Delon Nelson of D & I Fitness hosted an informal Thursday morning run at Floods Hill in South Orange. It was such a success that Nelson plans to make the run annual event.  The Turkey Trot drew nearly 50 runners and walkers, eager to loop Floods Hill and the Duck Pond area three times. Runners from South Orange, West Orange, Maplewood and Union attended the event. Nelson greeted the early-morning crowd with fruit, water and a healthy dose of holiday motivation. "My objective is to get folks moving before we start eating," he said. Nelson said "D & I is a small fitness studio based in South Orange. Our members were interested in doing a run before classes on Thanksgiving morning." Nelson decided to "put it out there for anyone to take part …

Shop Locally in Maplewood on Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24

Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Maplewood. Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities. Don't forget to hit the top retail corridors in town this Saturday, …

Fitness Studio Holds Thanksgiving Morning Run

D & I is holding an informal, no-cost Turkey Trot in South Orange

Get those turkeys trotting! In anticipation of the big meal to follow later, Delon Nelson of D & I Fitness is hosting an informal Thursday morning run at Floods Hill. The Turkey Trot will take place on Thursday, Nov. 22, from approximately 7:30 a.m. until about 8:15. Nelson explains, "D & I is a small fitness studio based in South Orange. Our members were interested in doing a run before classes on Thanksgiving morning." Nelson decided to "put it out there for anyone to take part in. So feel free to join us and run at your own leisure. My objective is to get folks moving before we start eating." The run itself will be between three and four miles, a "do what you can type of thing," says Nelson.  "If a fun time is had by all, we'll really …

New Jersey Cleans Up With State Towels

Ben Salmon is the only retailer in New Jersey who stocks these popular towels

Virginia is on the way. Pennsylvania and West Virginia are en route. They'll join several other state towels at Kitchen a la Mode in South Orange, where the vintage-inspired dish towels are selling like hot cakes. Ben Salmon, owner, poses here with the Garden State dish towel, which is a popular Thanksgiving host and hostess gift, he says. The towels, explains Salmon, are modelled on European souvenir towels, and represent 40 states so far. Kitchen a la Mode 19 South Orange Avenue  South Orange, NJ 07079

MSNBC Visits Maplewood Village

Downtown will be profiled on "Your Business" this Sunday.

Maplewoodians always knew the Village exemplified the spirit of Main Street America. Now the rest of America will find out.   MSNBC's "Your Business" program will feature Maplewood in a special Small Business Saturday segment that airs this Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 a.m. The visit came about when the show's producers remembered Maplewood from a story they had done on Words Bookstore two years ago. "They asked me to suggest some other merchants to interview, and they then selected a number of participants from the stores that I described to them," said Words owner Jonah Zimiles.   Hosted by JJ Ramberg, "Your Business" focuses on the world of America's small business entrepreneurs, featuring profiles, news, advice and tips. "We are very …

ShopRite Lowers Spending Threshold to Get Free Turkeys

It used to be $400. But because of Hurricane Sandy, all you have to do is spend $300 by November 22, and you can get a free turkey for your holiday table.

It's all to help people affected by Hurricane Sandy. ShopRite has lowered the amount shoppers must spend in order to qualify for a free Thanksgiving turkey, according to Supermarket News.  The traditional ShopRite turkeyfest happens once a year. During that time, shoppers who spend a certain amount of money can pick up a free turkey for their Thanksgiving table. This year, the supermarket recognizes that people who were affected by the recent hurricane probably didn't have food shopping on their minds - especially with areas of central New Jersey not having electricity, in some cases, for more than a week. The free turkey threshold was $400. ShopRite has changed that to $300, Supermarket News reports. The promotion, which runs from October…

Lines and Long Waits Mark Second Week After Sandy

Gas rationing will end, but stores remain crowded and the commute is difficult

The second full week post-Sandy brought some good news to the area: gas rationing ends Tuesday; power is back in most parts of town; NJ Transit has begun running Midtown Direct trains. However, life is far from normal days after the superstorm knocked out power for thousands in Essex County. Many residents note long lines for commuter buses and trains, and, surprisingly, in food stores. "Every store I've seen has been packed," said Julia Stern of South Orange. "I think we all need to restock refrigerators and freezers. Add to that the disruption of all the travel; the food couldn't travel either." And with many residents getting power back over the weekend, local grocery stores have been crowded. "Not to mention," says shopper Amanda …
