The annual family friendly celebration returns this weekend.
This article originally ran on April 25. After being rained out last weekend, Maplewood’s annual MayFest celebration will return to Springfield Avenue on Sunday, May 26. Springfield Avenue Partnership (SAP) is the host and Investors Bank and Walgreens are the presenters. Daibes Enterprises, DCH Millburn Audi, Overlook Medical Center and PSEG are this year’s event sponsors. Maplewood Village Alliance's Julie Doran will do double duty when Diana Vitrano leaves Springfield Ave. Partnership at the end of June.
Julie Doran, manager of the Maplewood Village Alliance (MVA), will step into a new role as manager of both the MVA and the Springfield Avenue Partnership (SAP), said Mayor Vic DeLuca Tuesday morning. Vitrano announced last week she would step down at the end of June for personal reasons. The two improvement districts will continue as separate entities with their own boards and budgets, with Doran heading both, said DeLuca. The MVA and the SAP are special improvement districts that use funds from assessing commercial properties, as well as funding from the township, for capital improvement, facades, business recruitment and special events and marketing. Twelve years of improvements and recruitment efforts bear fruit in Maplewood business district.
Springfield Avenue is bustling these days. Scores of new businesses have recently opened in and around the area, and while there are still vacancies, overall the Avenue appears to be on an upswing. Maplewood's Director of Community Relations Annette DePalma said a common reaction to the improvements the township has made over the last decade or so is, "The Avenue looks good." She said some businesses who considered investing 20 years ago but didn't are now reconsidering. "Springfield Avenue is pretty lively," she said. Township officials are on hand for grand opening of photo studio on Springfield Avenue.

Praise from The New York Times is always nice (in its recent review of Wild Ginger, the paper called Maplewood "a town overflowing with interesting restaurants"), but locals have known for years that our little hamlet boasts some of the best and most eclectic food in the state. That's why the return each spring of Maplewood Restaurant Week is such a highly anticipated event.
