Township will seek to have pub's license suspended because of alleged violations including serving minors.
Maplewood Township will seek to suspend the liquor license of St. James's Gate Publick House based on charges filed by police alleging that the pub sold alcohol to underage patrons on at least one occasion, according to documents Patch obtained. According to charges issued by the Maplewood Police Department, the pub also failed to comply with inspections of books of accounting. Township Prosecutor Annette DePalma will prosecute the case on behalf of the Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). The township, acting in its capacity as the local ABC, has authority over license holders in the city. The ABC decides what type of action to take against the bar. As a case involving an alleged assault at St. James's Gate Publick House winds it way through the courts, an online petition has been started to demand a formal apology and the resignation of the bartender. Bartender James Meade was accused of assault by a patron, Ethan Kresofsky, after a Jan. 8 incident in which Meade allegedly used a homophobic slur. Meade filed a counter-complaint, also alleging assault, a month later. The petition, posted on Change.org, calls Meade's alleged actions that January night "wholly unacceptable" and continues, "Gay slurs should not be tolerated under any circumstances." Sunny skies and balmy temps brought folks out in droves.
Saturday was the first day in what seems a very long time that truly felt like spring. With crystal blue skies, bright sunshine and temperatures hitting 60 degrees, people were outside as much as possible to take advantage of it. In Maplewood Village, Girl Scouts from Troop 568 (Jefferson School) were doing a brisk business in cookie sales next door to Kings. Down in front of Bank of America, a group of teens were hosting what appeared to have been a highly successful bake sale -- judging by the near-empty trays at mid-afternoon -- to raise money for cancer research. The Columbia High School Robotics Team, fresh from the Spring Fling Robotics Festival at South Orange Middle School, set up shop in front of St. James's Gate Publick House …

The first Nor'easter of 2013 (aka "Nemo") blanketed our region in a foot or more of snow. Once residents dug out, many were outside enjoying the excellent sledding and sunny skies.
