$550 Million in Local Spending Expected from Super Bowl

Estimated 400,000 people expected in region; team practices to be held in Florham Park and Media Day in Newark

The 2014 Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium is expected to have a $550 million economic impact on New Jersey and New York, with an estimated 400,000 people in the region, according to a report on dailyrecord.com. Businesses should start preparing for the flood of visitors now, according to speakers at The Big Game Huddle, an informational and networking event held Wednesday at Raritan Valley Country Club. “Start the celebration now,” said Wayne Hasenbalg, president and chief executive officer of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority. “You don’t have to wait until the week before the game," he told the dailyrecord.com. That impact will be felt in North and Central Jersey, as one of the competing teams will practice at the Atlantic …

Ravens QB Calls Meadowlands Super Bowl 'Retarded'

Baltimore Raven Joe Flacco said he believed MetLife Stadium should get a retractable dome if they want to host the Super Bowl in Bergen County.

Baltimore Ravens Quarterback Joe Flacco doesn't think much of plans to hold the Super Bowl at Bergen County's MetLife Stadium next year. When Denver Post reporter Mike Klis asked Flacco for his thoughts about the "cold weather" venue, the Super Bowl-bound quarterback said he thought it was "retarded," then, correcting his language, called it "stupid," according to a post on DenverPost.com. "If you want a Super Bowl, put a retractable dome on your stadium. Then you can get one," Flacco said, according to the post. "Other than that I don’t really like the idea. I don’t think people would react very well to it, or be glad to play anybody in that kind of weather.” Flacco, who grew up in South Jersey, won't have to worry about the weather when…

My favorite part was today's Goodell comment about his hope that next year the weather won't be severe. Today it's 19 and tonight it's snowing. You know- game time!! Is he kidding? It's winter in the northeast. What is he thinking about? And Flacco plays outside and weather shouldn't be an issue for this quarterback- but he won't have to worry he won't be playing in the big game next year- karma'…   more ›

Sunday Night Supper: Apple Cake and Magic Bars

This column is ending, but these Magic Bars and apple cake will see you through the winter.

Hello, loves. Since this will be my last Sunday Night Supper column, I thought I’d go out with a bang. I love to cook, but I love to bake even more, and what I love the most is when someone shares a recipe that she (or he) really loves and this new dish turns out to be shockingly spectacular. This happened New Year’s weekend. Every year since Y2K, we've been going to my brother's house in Montclair for New Year's. It's always a heady crowd, literally and figuratively. My sister-in-law Nancy is a psychologist. She has two sisters. One is a high-powered TV executive who is married to a psychoanalyst. Another sister, a law professor, used to be married to a psychiatrist and is now married to a physics professor. My sister-in-law's mother …

My mouth is watering! Oh my gosh, that sounds so good. And I'm so sorry this column isn't being continued. I loved the recipes, and the way Laura Zinn can make a recipe "come to life." Who thought a recipe could do that?!!   more ›

Super Sunday Taxi Guide

Can't drive? Let someone else do it for you!

Today the New York Giants will face off against the New England Patriots at Super Bowl XLVI. Whether you're enjoying the game at home, a friend's house, or at a local restaurant or bar, don't take any chances turning a fun day into a tragedy by getting behind the wheel if you've had too much to drink. Below is an alphabetical list of taxi cab companies in Essex County. Before you head out for the big game, jot down the number of your local cab company, and if you plan on drinking, don't drive. Belleville/Bloomfield Belleville Cab and Taxi: (973) 751-1400 New Jersey Taxi and Limo (Bloomfield): (973) 748-7700 Black and White Taxi (Bloomfield/Belleville): (973) 759-3311 The Caldwells Mountain Yellow Cab Company (Caldwell): (973) 226-1155…

Sunday Night Supper: Wing Men

Even if you don't pay attention to every play, the Super Bowl provides an opportunity to chow down.

A few weeks ago, I was digging into a plate of Buffalo wings at Bunny's in South Orange. We had gone there to watch a Steelers game with our neighbors, one of whom is from Pittsburgh. I'll admit I had my back to the TV and was far more interested in the food than the football. I don't care much about football, though I've spent most of my life living near and with people who do. Bunny's deep fried Buffalo wings are really good, one of the restaurant's top sellers, along with the pizza and garlic salad. Sadly, I had to bolt those wings down and leave some behind to go pay a shiva call. I spent the next few days craving wings and decided I'd use Super Bowl LXVI as an excuse to make them– not that I was actually planning to watch all that …

Or you could just buy the Defcon Sauces of your desired heat level. www.defconsauces.com. I am the founder and owner of the company. Just to clear things up a bit, we were the official wing sauce of the New Jersey Devils for the first few years the Prudential Center was opened, and were the wing sauce of Madison Square Garden for years as well.   more ›

A Sign of Sweet, Sweet Victory to Come?

Bakeries around the towns offer delectable Super Bowl treats.

Super Bowl food fare may bring to mind savory snacks — wings, chips, cheese and dips — but local bakers are also serving up their share of the game-related treats this weekend. From Splurge in Millburn to Eden Gourmet in South Orange and The Able Baker in Maplewood, Super Bowl-themed cakes, cupcakes and cookies are on display this Super Saturday and Sunday, but disappearing quickly. Julie Pauly at The Able Baker says that the bakery on Maplewood Avenue will be selling Giants — and a few Patriots — football cookies while supplies last today (hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday). The cookies are $3 each. Pauly also made some beautiful Super Bowl cakes and custom-boxed Patriots/Giants cookies ($20/box), but "…
