Big in China Returns to Suzy Que's

Local music, local BBQ this Friday in West Orange.

  Big in China, will return to Suzy Que's BBQ (34 S. Valley Road) in West Orange on Friday, Feb. 1 and again on March 1.   Made up of local musicians Alan Paul, Dave Gomberg, Rick Wagner and Jonathan Kampner, the band plays music like the Blues, The Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, originals and more at one of the area's favorite BBQ joints.  "We will be adding new material for each show," said Paul, who uprooted his family from their Maplewood home to move to Beijing in 2005 when his wife became the Wall Street Journal's China bureau chief. "This time...an original by me, as well as tunes by Tom Waits, Albert Collins and The Band."  The concert is family friendly and runs from 8:30 p.m. until around midnight. …

While she may be from Long Island, Susan Hoffberg’s heart is pure Dixie. After working in corporate America for 28 years, she decided to call it quits and took over the Quincy’s Restaurant building and transformed it into a barbeque Mecca for West Orange residents last year.  Hoffberg prides herself not only on the reputation of her barbeque short ribs, but also on the fact that Suzy Ques is as culturally rich as the town of West Orange itself, attracting people to the restaurant and bar as a sort of “Cheers-like” atmosphere where everyone knows your name and what dry rub you prefer.
