Bikes Stolen from Train Stations

Following a reader's report of a theft in August, two more bikes have been stolen in September from the Maplewood train station and two have been stolen in South Orange.

Maplewood police reported last week that a bicycle parked at the Maplewood train station was stolen. The bicycle was the second reported stolen this month from the Maplewood train station. There have also been similar reports in South Orange. On Wednesday, Sep. 16, police say a red and black Haro Light Line mountain bike was taken from the bike rack at the train station. The bike was secured with a chain to the rack in the morning. Despite the chain, it was gone when the owner returned later in the day. Six days before that, a Maplewood resident reported that his Trek bicycle was stolen from the Maplewood Train Station sometime between 07:30 a.m. and 7:22 p.m. South Orange Police have noted that two bicycles have been stolen from South …

GPS Units Stolen

A familiar crime returns after a welcome break.

Earlier this year, Maplewood Police reported a rash of GPS thefts from cars parked in the Township. While theft of the navigation units have popped up here and there a couple times since, the frequency of the reports has noticeably dropped. This week, however, police report that two GPS units were stolen from automobiles. Police say that sometime between 5:30 and 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sep. 16, a thief broke into a work van parked on Wellesley Rd. The van’s passenger side window was broken. A NavMan GPS System and Kodak Digital Camera were reportedly taken. The next day, a Richmond street resident told police that a thief smashed the passenger side window of a 2001 Volkswagen parked on the street. The theft occurred between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. …

Police Report Thwarted Trailer Theft

A man tried to hitch a trailer to his truck.

It’s good that this theft was thwarted and everything, but if the guy pulled it off, it would have been one of the smoothest hijackings ever. It sounds like something that wouldn’t even register as a crime for most eyewitnesses. On Friday, September 11, a man in a blue or black Volvo semi-truck drove into a Camptown Road Warehouse and hooked the truck up to a trailer full of goods. An alert yard switcher saw the man, and approached him. Upon questioning, the truck driver was not able to provide paperwork for the trailer. The man, police say, disconnected his truck from the trailer in a hurry and fled towards Chancellor Ave.

Are Bike Thieves Targeting the Train Station?

A Patch reader says his bike was stolen from near the tracks.

A number of bicycles have been stolen from the Township over the last couple of months. The reported incidents have varied, with some bikes stolen from garages, from porches and from schools. In one case from earlier this month, juveniles stole bikes from other youths following a scuffle. Now, a Patch reader reports that his bicycle was stolen from the train station. According to an email sent to Patch in response to an article about bike theft, a Maplewood resident's bicycle locked to a rack at the train station was stolen earlier this week. It is the first report we have come across saying that bikes have been stolen from the station. We are waiting for word from the police if there have been other reported instances. Earlier this summer…

Police Report Two Burglaries

Two homes were illegally entered and robbed.

Two  burglaries occurred in the township in late August, police said this week. Police are investigating both incidents. No arrests have been made. On Wednesday, August 19, a Brookside Road resident told police that his home had been entered via an open front window sometime between 10 am and 6:30 pm. The thief reportedly made off with an LG brand LCD television, a Canon digital camera, a Nikon camera and a portable DVD player. The following day, a Prospect street resident reported that her home was broken into, and robbed of gold jewelry. The suspects evidently gained entry to the home by forcing open the front door. A home and a business reported burglaries earlier this month.

More Bicycles Stolen

In one report, some kids took other kids' bikes by force.

Police have reported that more bicycles have been stolen in the Township, including an incident where juvenile suspects took bikes from other juveniles with force. The newest reported thefts follow a number of bicycle theft reports in Maplewood this summer. On Tuesday, Aug. 18, two youths reportedly had their bicycles stolen by force. According to a police report, a 12-year-old was struck in the head, and knocked down to the ground near Oakland Road. Police found two youths who matched the descriptions of the suspects. The juveniles, who were not named because of their age, were remanded to the Essex County Youth House. The stolen bicycles were returned to the victims. The following day, a Maplewood resident told police that his Mongoose …

At approximately 10:35 p.m. Saturday, police responded on a report of an armed robbery to the area of Essex Avenue and South 4th St. A 37-year-old East Orange man told police he had been approached by two black male teenagers. Maplewood Police Post Bike Safety Tips

The force recommends using heavy duty locks and other measures.

After a number of bicycle thefts this month and earlier this summer, the Maplewood police has posted some anti-theft tips on their Web site. Most of the advice is fairly intuitive—they recommend chaining up bicycles when they're outside and locking garage doors when they are stored. The police say that bike theives are often juveniles, and that they will frequently ride two to a bike, looking for unsecured bicycles. Bikes, police say, can be sold for quick cash on the street. The tips are included below. The Maplewood Police Department would like to remind all bicycle owners to secure and lock their bikes, both on the road and at home. We are in the midst of the warmer part of the year when the vast majority of bike thefts historically …

Two More Cars Stolen in August

Both cars were recovered by authorities.

Maplewood police have reported that two cars were stolen in mid-August, bringing the total number of car thefts in the township up to three for the month. In the two latest cases, police later recovered both of the stolen vehicles. On Friday, Aug. 14, a Garfield Place resident told police that her 2003 Chrysler Town and Country minivan had been stolen that day sometime between the hours of 4 and 5 PM. The vehicle was recovered in Newark. Two days later, a 1997 Jeep Cherokee belonging to a woman living on Woodside Rd. was reported stolen. The car, police say, was stolen sometime overnight. Like the minivan, the Cherokee was later recovered in Newark. Earlier in the month, an automobile was reportedly stolen from Parker Avenue. According to …

Man Arrested on Burglary Charges

Suspect reportedly tried to enter two occupied homes.

Last week, a South Orange man was arrested by Maplewood police after allegedly attempting to break into a string of houses. On Wednesday, Aug. 12, a Tuscan road resident called police concerning reports about a man acting suspiciously. Reportedly, after ringing the home’s doorbell, the suspect— later identified as Lonnie Askew, 37, of South Orange—attempted to open the home’s back door. An occupant of the home called police, and provided them with a description of the man and information about where he seemed to be heading. Askew reportedly attempted to gain entry into a Rutgers St. shortly after the Tuscan Road resident’s call to the police. An occupant of the Rutgers St. home called police, saying a man was trying to open the back door …
