Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire: Indigo Smoke Returns to Maplewood

A soft open yields a packed house.

On Friday, Sep. 18, a few friends and I ventured to Indigo Smoke for dinner. Unfortunately, we were not the only ones with the same idea. Even though they are not officially open—owner Lance Knowling said it was a soft open—the place was packed. Not bad for their third night of service. We arrived at 7 p.m. without reservations and were told they could not sit us until 9 pm. Thankfully, the bar was a fun scene and the yummy cocktails, which were not as pricey as we expected, helped tide us over. Knowling said he’s not sure when or even if they will have a grand opening. “The plan was to do a soft opening for a few weeks and then send out a press release,” he said. “However, we weren’t expecting business to take off like this so soon. I’m …

Clancy's Ghost Rock the Gate Friday Night

Clancy's Ghost once again haunt the Gate.

Clancy’s Ghost, who are playing at St. James's Gate on Friday night at 9:30, bill themselves as “Irish Country Bluegrass Pop Rock.” It’s a lot of ingredients, but the final result blends them together nicely for crowd-pleasing melodic tunes played with traditional instruments.   “It’s got a rock feel even though we’re doing traditional music,” Clancy’s Ghost singer Andrew Ogilvie said. Ogilvie, who also handles guitar, harmonica and tin whistle duty for the group, is a veteran of New Jersey Celtic rock band the Barleycorns. He touted Clancy’s Ghost's ability to jump genres. “We’ll play an Irish song, then switch around and play ‘I Want You to Want Me’ by Cheap Trick,” he said. Clancy’s Ghost regularly haunt the Gate; their bass player Rick…

Village Alliance Manager Koehler to Leave Job

Her last day will be in October.

Amy Koehler is leaving her position as the Maplewood Village Alliance’s Director. Her last day at the job will be Oct. 31. The Maplewood Village Alliance is a group of Maplewood Village businesses incorporated as a special improvement district. The manager is charged with a number of responsibilities, including promoting businesses. Koehler, a former CNN assignment editor, is the third manager for the Alliance and has held the position for about two years. During her tenure, the alliance has initiated several events, including the recent Spring Open Market and the first-ever restaurant week. Earlier this year she was profiled by Patch. “I would say that it is a mutual parting of the ways,” Koehler said in an email. “I'm on until Oct. 31 …

This Weekend is Sidewalk Sale Days and Summer BBQ

This weekend, village businesses offer outdoor dining and more.

The Fourth of July is a distant memory, and Maplewoodstock is over. But the summer is far from over. Which is a good thing, as summer weather only seemed to start last week. To celebrate the fact that the days are going to continue to be hot and long, Maplewood Village is holding a weekend-long bonanza of barbecue and summer sales. From Friday, July 17 to Sunday, July 19, Maplewood Village merchants will be setting up out on the streets and offering wine tastings, refreshments and more.  For parts of the weekend, the sections of the Village will be blocked off, so drive—and shop—carefully. The weekend event is the latest example of the Maplewood Village Alliance’s ramping up of their programming this year, following the previous events …

Girls Night Out On Despite Rain

Tonight’s Village Event goes forward regardless of the weather.

Forget the forecast. Tonight’s Girls Night Out promotional event is going on as planned. When asked if the event was still moving forward, the Maplewood Village Alliance’s village manager Amy Koehler responded quickly and emphatically. “Absolutely!” Koehler wrote in an email. She said she had been updating the Village’s accounts on Twitter and Facebook to assure people that the village event, which is offering promotions and discounts aimed mainly at women, was still happening. She said outdoor dining might be affected, but otherwise nothing is going to change. Perch owner and event co-organizer Michelle Bessey echoed Koehler's enthusiasm. "Rain or shine, the fun is inside," Bessey said. We’ve included a complete list of events and …
