For a 10-year-old, Michael Robertson stays busy. The Maplewood youth alter is an altar server at his church and helps stock the church pantry. He regularly visits his grandparents’ nursing home, where he plays piano for all the residents. When he’s in his own neighborhood, he helps the elderly with chores including gardening, snow shoveling and carrying groceries. Despite the rainy weather of the day, summer is here. For children and their families, that means it’s time for camp. But due to ongoing economic concerns, it will be difficult for many families to get their kids out of the house and at a camp this summer. The South Mountain YMCA hopes to help. This month the Metro YMCA of the Oranges group, which the South Mountain YMCA is a part of, ratchets up its fundraising to help families get kids to camp. Metro YMCA CEO Rick Gorab said the goal for this year’s fundraising effort, which they’re calling the Mission Camp campaign and will be a more vigorous campaign than in past years, is $100,000. Gorab said that camp is not only a cherished childhood fixture, it can be a boon for busy parents with …

Executive Director Kieltyka Takes job as CEO of the Somerset Valley YMCA system.
The South Mountain YMCA is facing a big change, but Y employees are confident they can handle them. Executive Director of Maplewood’s South Mountain YMCA Paul Kieltyka has resigned from his position to become the CEO of the Somerset Valley YMCA. His last day at the South Mountain Y will be May 5, and it’s likely to be an emotional one. “He’s been here almost seven years,” YMCA spokesperson Roslyn Trewick said. “Quite a few people are going to be sad to see him go, including myself.” It’s an upward move for Kieltyka, who will be managing three YMCA branches at the Somerset Valley system. Trewick praised his tenure at the Y, saying that he took advantage of employees' passions to improve the program. The continuing drama camp and …
