Youth enrichment organization may have to cut services, look for other means of funding.
The article has been updated with a comment from Township Committeeman Jerry Ryan. Maplewood Mayor Victor DeLuca said at the Saturday budget hearings that he will not again vote for township funding to YouthNet. Representatives from the non-profit, South Orange/Maplewood-based youth enrichment organization presented their accomplishments from 2012 and goals for 2013 before asking the township committee for a $15,000 contribution in the coming year. The request, the same amount as last year’s, would go towards funding YouthNet’s scholarship programs, after school programs and materials they use to seek larger-scale sponsorship. The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) of YouthNet, a local non-profit, is holding a music-themed fundraiser for Hurricane Sandy relief this Friday, November 30, 2012, from 7:00-10:00pm at the Baird Community Center in South Orange. Featured at this event will be talented CHS musicians from Plus Five, Mother Funckers, Handsome, Hustlers, MOA and the CHS a capella group. Student artists will also be exhibiting their art. After-school program continues to grow for middle school students in Maplewood and South Orange.
Here in Maplewood and South Orange there’s a thriving, exciting after-school network advancing the social and intellectual development of our youth. YouthNet, now entering its fifth year, offers an after-school learning opportunity at South Orange Middle School and Maplewood Middle School, staffed entirely by district teachers. At YouthNet’s core are more than 30 after school enrichment activities offered free of charge, along with a fee-based developmental program for focus on homework help and tutoring. Far from being just custodial, YouthNet has measured its success by advancing the learning and life training skill sets of our students with its programs, helping them broaden their participation in both social and work settings. …

There’s a lot of life in the middle schools after 3 p.m. It was well after the final bell had rung at South Orange Middle School, but the inviting smell of popcorn was everywhere. But if you wanted to partake, the cafeteria was the wrong direction — the goods were to be had during the Animaniacs Club, one of YouthNet’s vibrant after school enrichment offerings. Diane Grant, a SOMS 6th grade science teacher and YouthNet instructor, delivers a movie and the traditional snacks to club members each Friday. “It really gives the kids time to unwind and socialize,” she said. “It let’s them see a movie and just have fun. Unfortunately, without any explanation they need to be taken at face value - which does not leave a a good impression of someone who claims to be a leader.
