MSNBC Profiles Maplewood Family Business

Alchemy Hour, owned by the Harvey family, is spotlighted in a segment on family-run businesses.

Clearly, MSNBC likes Maplewood Village. The network's "Your Business" program recently profiled Alchemy Hour, the clothing store on Baker Street in Maplewood, on its Sunday morning show. It is the second time in just a few months that the network has spotlighted local businesses. MSNBC's producers met and interviewed the shop's owner, Janean Harvey, when they were filming a segment on Maplewood Village for Small Business Saturday back in November. They were particularly interested in Harvey's backstory: her parents, John and Helen, investors in the store, were retail veterans who formerly owned Freeman's Fish Market on Maplewood Avenue. The senior Harveys said in the video they helped to launch Alchemy Hour because they knew Janean's …

Baker Street Bustles in Summer

It may be the dog days, but this little strip of Maplewood is hot, hot, hot.

Late summer is a notoriously tough time for local businesses, but you wouldn't know it from the buzz of activity on Baker Street. On a Thursday afternoon, Peggy Excell-Stone of Lotus Petals put together a sample bunch of some of the store's most popular summer flowers, including yellow roses, gerbera daisies and sunflowers.  Excell-Stone said that the shop is heading into prime wedding season.  "The season has moved from June to late summer and early fall," she said. She revealed that for one upcoming nuptials the shop is doing all roses, from the bridal party to the table decor.  Across the street, David Heffernan of Revolution antique shop was standing in front of his store offering parched passers-by samples of his homemade iced teas. …

Risa, I'm glad you mentioned 108 Baker. The article came about somewhat "organically," so I'm happy to give a shout-out to any other awesome Baker Street folks I inadvertently excluded!   more ›

Photos: Seen in Maplewood This Week

Goings on around town.

There's always something going on in Maplewood.  A cart of free books propped up next to a house for sale begs the question: Hmm, should I put in an offer...or just grab a couple of paperbacks? (I'd go for the house; it's a beauty!) Meanwhile, Janean Harvey of Alchemy Hour was spotted being filmed for a video the store will post on its website.  Can't wait to see it. Finally, a little guy at the Words Bookstore Where's Waldo Celebration turned a bit camera shy after collecting his prize. Share your Maplewood photos with Patch by uploading them to this article. We always like to see what's going on around town.

Maplewood Village Shop Window Gets Special Treatment

Alchemy Hour boutique gets an official display from Quicksilver.

Sea glass and colorful spheres in shades of white and green, evocative of the sea, went on display at the Alchemy Hour clothing boutique. The artifacts are part of a professional display from the Quicksilver Women's clothing line, bringing a seaside feel to downtown Maplewood. Alchemy Hour owner Janean Harvey said she was thrilled that her shop window was chosen to have an official display from the clothing company. Harvey said the worker came by the store on Wednesday afternoon and set it up within an hour. Harvey said the women's division of Quicksilver is one of her favorite fashion lines. She said their clothing is "well-constructed and they do a lot of cool things with their designs and add special details." She noted that one white …
