SOM Teacher Defends Job Against Budget Ax

District's only reading specialist makes spirited statement against proposed budget cut.

The article has been updated to include a comment from Board President Beth Daugherty. A South Orange - Maplewood School District employee whose position is likely to be cut if the Board of Education votes to approve the administration's proposed 2013-14 budget spoke out against the move at Monday night's BOE meeting. Elimination of the district's two elementary curriculum specialists (one each for reading and math), is part of a package of reductions being proposed by the administration in an effort to close a $2.8 million budget gap. Ken and CJV: it is correct that this individual teacher will most likely be reassigned back to a classroom teaching position, as will the other specialist. What Mrs. Grohman was speaking against was the elimination of the positions themselves.   more ›
