Last Chance: Valentine's Day Sweets and Treats

Local bakeries still have plenty of holiday-themed goodies for procrastinators.

  Still haven't figured out dessert for tonight? There are still a few hours left to score some tasty treats for Valentine's Day. Cupcake Corral (410 Ridgewood Road) has gorgeous cupcakes, including Red Velvet w/black currant buttercream. They are open today until 5 p.m.  Able Baker (187 Maplewood Avenue) has a selection of iced cookies including the famed Julie-O's, heartshaped and filled with hot pink cream; linzer cookies, heart shaped chocolate shortbread and more -- plus chocolate ganache cakes and a selection of cupcakes. They are open until 6 p.m. Don't forget about Gigi's Cupcakes and Edo's Quality Cakes, both on Springfield Avenue. Happy heart day!

  Gigi's Cupcakes officially opened today on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood. Mayor Vic DeLuca, Township Committee members Marlon K. Brownlee and India Larrier, and representatives from the Springfield Avenue Partnership joined in the celebration. Gigi's Cupcakes Opens on Springfield Avenue

Grand opening and ribbon cutting is on Saturday.

  Gigi's Cupcakes, a family-owned web-based bakery business, has opened its first bricks and mortar shop on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood. "Everyone has been so warm and welcoming," said Gigi Gallodoro, who owns the business with her sister, Nicole. "The Springfield Avenue Partnership is so lovely and wonderful, they are a great team." The shop, at the corner of Springfield and Indiana Street, across from the location of the Maplewood Farmers Market, was formerly ID Bakery. After eight years of running their successful cupcake catering and delivery service in Scotch Plains, the Gallodoro sisters decided to open their first shop and began looking for a location.
