The New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark is celebrating Kwanzaa with The Spirit of Kwanzaa, a performance incorporating tap, hip-hop and ballet produced by IllStyle & Peace Productions. There will also be a Kwanzaa Children’s Festival. Both are on Dec. 22. A Kwanzaa Marketplace, where patrons can pick up last-minute gifts, is open in NJPAC’s Prudential Hall lobby Dec. 21 and 22 as well.. Philadelphia’s high-octane Illstyle & Peace Productions celebrate The Spirit of Kwanzaa in NJPAC’s Victoria Theater on Saturday, Dec. 22 and 2pm and 5pm. The James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival continues this weekend at NJPAC. The weeklong festival pays tribute to longtime Newarker and late great jazz artist James Moody. Headliners for Friday night's 7 p.m. show include George Benson, The Manhattan Transfer and David Sanborn as well as special guests Kenny Barron, Jon Faddis, Jimmy Heath, Paquito D’Rivera, Christian McBride, and more. On Saturday, there will be an 8 p.m. show featuring an all-star performance of the original Gil Evans arrangements of three classic Miles Davis recordings. Those performers include trumpeter Terence Blanchard, bassist Christian McBride, drummer Peter Erskine, and many more. NJPAC is hosting a night of Motown greats this Saturday. In honor of this year's NJPAC fundraising gala, the concert hall will feature A Night in Motown - including En Vogue, The Four Tops, Valerie Simpson and Darlene Love. The performers will be under the direction of American Idol music director Ray Chew. The show will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at Prudential Hall. The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) has announced its schedule for the 2012-13 season, which is filled with new festivals, curatorial and artistic collaborations, and community partnerships, programs and artist outreach that will take place within and beyond its stages. Throughout the season, NJPAC will continue to add performances. Longtime event at NJPAC offers cultural items, sense of community
For as much as this past weekend's event in the New Jersey Performing Arts Center lobby was branded as the Kwanzaa Artisan Festival, Lorna Johnson looked around and saw so much more. "I think there's very spaces in the Newark metropolitan area … that are what I call a village," said Johnson, a festival vendor and Newark resident. "This is definitely an urban village." Several vendors set up shop in this village Friday through Sunday, selling primarily – but not exclusively – African-themed artwork, clothing and jewelry.
