ReplyThanks for including one of my photos in the "Best of" list. As a woman of words, it's a pleasure to sometimes communicate without using any. Congratulations to all. Happy, safe new year.

ReplyCORRECTION: The term used by Sandy regarding water slipping over an angled trail is not sheath but "sheet," like water sheeting off a windshield. Thanks to Dennis Percher of the South Mountain Conservancy for the correction.

ReplyA couple of small addenda to my above story.
First, Dennis Percher of the South Mountain Conservancy informs me that the hunters must be at least 500 feet away from any inhabited buildings, giving a broad margin of safety between the hunting and houses.
Second, I learned that my reforestation site is not the largest. Though at 15,500 sq. ft., it is indeed larger than the many 5,184 square foot sites (72 x 72 feet), there are seven sites larger than 20,000 square feet with the largest (besides the 14 acre Preserve) being 42,624 square feet, or just under an acre.

ReplyFantastic photos. I have video of a Cooper's hawk that downed a mourning dove in my neighbor's yard a while back. I'll try to send it to you. It was truly incredible.

ReplyHello, Raymond. I recognize your name from the Watercooler. Thank you very much for your comments.
Hello, Carol. There are certainly many sides to the complicated relationship between nature and humanity living in such close quarters as we do here in Essex County. I hear your concerns and hope to address them in future articles.
Happy Thanksgiving to all -

What courage and strength it takes to act "normal" in the face of fate -- "destroyed me when I said goodnight to my kids" destroyed me, too. All my prayers, Sharon. You'll be fine!
