Interestingly—and perhaps off topic—Springfield Avenue was originally a toll road. It was commissioned in 1806 and was the Springfield Morris Turnpike, aimed at connecting Newark with Springfield and onto Morristown.
Jeff, I'd have to agree with you certainly on one aspect of your argument—the Interstate Highway Act of 1954 poured billions and billions of dollars over decades into building our nationwide network of interstate highways. This is something that was never undertaken for trains in this country.
