More NYC Transplants on the Way?

A new study says New York has become too expensive for the middle class. Could they settle in Maplewood?

The road to Maplewood is paved in Park Slope. As real estate blogs love to point out, Maplewood is a destination for city dwellers who want to leave the city behind, but not too far behind. The town is full of urban transplants, recent and not-so-recent. And a new report on the expense of city living indicates more might be on their way.

This week, the Manhattan-based thinktank the Center for an Urban Future released a report predicting increased exodus of the middle class from New York City due to the skyrocketing cost of living (Maplewood's property taxes may be high, but the report cites annual childcare costs of $25,000—moving here could be a bargain in the long run). Read the report as a PDF here.
